The demise of the Soviet Union brought ¨çabout/up environmental improvement in some areas. Many factories shut down because they were no longer economically (°¡)viable, which itself reduced pollution. The huge mills in the Russian city of Magnitogorsk, for example, produce less than half the raw steel they did a decade ago, and global competition threatens to reduce demand further. Ironically, cleaner air has been the result.

In other areas, however, the breakdown of centralized authority has only contributed ¨èin/to more environmental degradation. Waste materials are often handled more casually than in the past, since the government no longer has much effective regulatory power. An especially vexing problem is the disposal of nuclear byproducts, now sometimes smuggled out of the country and possibly used in illegal weapons manufacturing.

Russia also faces an impending crisis of wildlife extinction. The old Soviet regime had some success in protecting both endangered species and sizable areas of natural habitat noted ¨éfor/from their biological diversity. Unregulated hunting and trapping are now on the rise, however, and in some areas are virtually uncontrolled. It is questionable whether such animals as the Siberian tiger and the Siberian leopard, both inhabiting the forests of Russia's Far East, will survive the next few decades.
